Digital Citizenship

In Kindergarten, we teach the children to respect themselves and others by listening and using nice words.  We practice role playing different social and learning situations as a class.  We identify and show how to be disrespectful (aka a bad friend) to help them identify the negative choices.  With the Internet, I am currently deciding what websites are allowed in the classroom.  As a class, we decide what websites are good (fun to play) and which ones we don't want to play again.  When we being our Writer's Workshop unit on Book Reviews, the children and I will be visiting different sites and deciding what makes a book review true or false.  This unit is also where I will teach about 21st century citizenship.

  1. I like how you teach the kids to " respect themselves and others by listening and using nice words".
Also, a BIG thank you for your help:)

  2. It sounds like you already have some great ideas and procedures in place with your students for teaching digital citizenship and responsibility! I can imagine how challenging that must be with such a young age group.

  4. I think that role playing would be such a great way to show respect on the internet as well...visual learning is always great!

  5. I think that with this writer's workshop unit it is a great opportunity to teach the students about internet safety and that what they put out there on the internet can be very public.

  7. Students could then apply their book review skills to websites as well, stating why the website is a "good" website and which are not.
